(Cross-posted from AndroidPeek)

Today I tried to install the latest Swype Beta update i.e. version 2.15.56.14870. While installing, I came to know that they’ve changed the way Swype beta used to install, now we need to install Swype first, then disable it from settings (so that it can generate a license for the device) and then re-enable it.

Now the problem with this is, that the new MIUI rom does not have the option to disable a keyboard, though we have the option to select the default keyborad, we can just disable any one of them (unlike the stock rom where we can disable a keyboard). So this problem leads to Swype not getting properly installed and giving this error: “The Swype package you installed is configured for another device…”

So here’s what I did to correctly install Swype:

1. Unistalled both the Swype installer and Swype.

2. Downloaded the latest Swype installer from here: http://beta.swype.com/android/get

3. Open the installer and login with your Swype Beta id and password

4. Click on “Install Swype”

5. When it tells you to “Disable Swype”, hit the home menu and open “Titanium Backup”, then scroll down to “Swype” and click “Backup” (no need to backup the installer) and after backing up Swype, click “Uninstall”.

6. Long click the home button and click “Swype Installer”

7. “Generate License” button should now be activated, click it

8. It will now go to the login screen again

9. Login again and after logging in, it will again tell you to “Install Swype”, DON’T click on install this time

10. Hit the home button, open “Titanium Backup”, goto Swype and click “Restore”

11. Long press Home and click “Swype Installer”

12. Click “Finish”

13. You should now have Swype installed and running perfectly fine.

If you still have problems installing Swype on the MIUI rom, leave below in comments and I’ll be glad to solve them.

UPDATE: After trying my own method again to confirm if it’s working fine or now, I found out that it DOESN’T work instantly, after each time you reach step 13, open up your keyboard and check if it’s working or not, if not, then you will need to repeat the whole process again and again till it works (Max 6 tries are guaranteed to make it work (don’t know why but this is how it is with the latest MIUI))

CyanogenMod for Commtiva Z1

CyanogenMod for Commtiva Z1

A month ago I gifted a Spice MI-300 to my father. It came preloaded with Android 1.6 and Android 2.1 was promised as an upgrade. Now about a week ago the update came out and I updated the handset to 2.1, but to my surprise the update had underclocked the CPU speed to 400 Mhz instead of using the processor to it’s full potential i.e. @ 600 Mhz. So I mailed them and came to know that this was done so as to increase the phone’s battery life.

Nevertheless I started to research about rooting the handset and upgrading it with a custom rom. I was surprised to know that this handset is in fact a clone/rebranded version of Commtiva Z1 and not only that, it’s not just the only clone of Commtiva Z1 but there are plenty of other variants/clones using the exactly same hardware.

Finally after all my research I was able to find a way to root Mi-300 (and it’s variants) and install a custom 2.1 rom so that I could overclock it back to 600 Mhz. For step by step instructions on how to root and install a custom Android 2.1 rom, go HERE, else for installing CyanogenMod 6.1 RC1 i.e. Android Froyo 2.2 continue reading…

Recently a new way of rooting an Android device came up which allowed us to root without unlocking the bootloader and thereby not voiding our warranty. This method was way too complicated for a normal user as it involved opening the phone and messing around with the SD card slot. Very soon after this method, another method came which allowed us to Root an Android device  without opening our phones and without messing with the SD card slot, but again this method wasn’t as easy as the one i’m going to tell you next…

Few days ago a Taiwanese blog wrote about a method which indeed is the simplest of all methods to root a device without  unlocking the bootloader. It uses the same exploit as used to root the Droid X. All it requires you to do is just a click and you’ll be having a rooted android device without even voiding your warranty.

Here’s how to root your android device using the most simplest method ever:

1. Click Here and download the latest version of  ”Universal Androot”

2.  Install & open the apk file

3. Click “Root”

That’s it! Everything else it will do by itself  (It downloads and installs Superuser and then roots your phone).

Root your android phone

It also has an option to unroot your device in case of any issue.

Here is a list of phones compatible with this method:

  • Google Nexus One (2.2)
  • Google G1 (1.6)
  • HTC Hero (2.1)
  • HTC Magic (1.5)
  • Dell Streak (2.1)
  • Motorola Milestone (2.1)
  • Motorola XT701
  • Motorola XT800 (2.1)
  • Motorola ME511
  • Sony Ericsson X10 (1.6)
  • Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro (1.6)
  • Acer Liquid (2.1)
  • Acer neoTouch E400 (2.1)
  • Vibo A688 (1.6)
  • Lenovo Lephone (1.6)

Here is a list of phones which are NOT compatible with this method:

  • Samsung i9000 (Galaxy S)
  • Samsung i6500U
  • Samsung i7500
  • Motorola ME600 (1.5)
  • Motorola MB300
  • Motorola ME501
  • HuaWei U8220
  • HTC Desire / Legend / Wildfire (/ system can not write)
